Video of the Week: Portinho da Arrábida

Portinho da Arrábida: Paradise near Lisbon

Just about 45 minutes south of Lisbon, tucked between the city of Setúbal and the dramatic hills of the Serra da Arrábida, lies one of Portugal’s most enchanting coastal landscapes: Portinho da Arrábida.

Close enough for an easy day trip from the capital, yet far enough to feel like a world apart, this stretch of coastline offers a rare blend of wild nature, crystal-clear waters, and quiet Mediterranean charm.

What makes this area truly special is the striking contrast between the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean and the lush green of the Arrábida mountains.

The serra seems to plunge straight into the sea, creating hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, and postcard-perfect beaches where the water often looks more Caribbean than European.

On bright, sunny days, the sea shimmers in shades of turquoise and cobalt, making it a dream location for photography, swimming, and simply soaking in the beauty.
One of the most magical aspects of Portinho da Arrábida is its connection to the Sado River.

This estuary is home to a resident population of wild dolphins, and with a bit of luck, visitors can spot them swimming gracefully along the riverbanks.

Boat trips from Setúbal offer a respectful way to see these incredible creatures in their natural habitat, adding a truly unforgettable element to any visit. For those who love scenic drives, a road trip t

hrough the Serra da Arrábida is a must. Winding mountain roads reveal breathtaking viewpoints over the Atlantic, secret picnic spots, and trails that lead to secluded beaches.

Stopping at Miradouros along the way gives you a sweeping perspective of the coastline that simply can’t be experienced from the shore alone.

Nearby, the charming town of Azeitão is well worth a visit, especially for wine lovers. Known for its excellent Moscatel and traditional Portuguese wineries, Azeitão offers cellar tours, tastings, and beautiful vineyards set against the backdrop of the mountains.

Just a little further along the coast, Sesimbra provides another lovely stop, with its fishing heritage, sandy beach, and delicious seafood restaurants.

For filming and photography, the best time of day is either early morning or golden hour at sunset, when the light softens, the water glows, and the crowds are thinner.

Bringing sturdy shoes is recommended if you plan to explore the trails, and packing water and snacks is wise, as some of the more secluded beaches have limited facilities.

Portinho da Arrábida is more than just a destination, it’s an experience of nature, serenity, and raw coastal beauty that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.

Restaurants at Portinho da Arrábida we recommend:

O Farol

The most iconic restaurant in Portinho da Arrábida. It sits right by the water with a beautiful terrace overlooking the turquoise bay. Best known for fresh grilled fish, seafood rice, and traditional Portuguese coastal dishes. Great for a relaxed lunch with views.

D’uportinho

A classic, laid-back seaside restaurant literally on the sand. Casual atmosphere, simple but tasty Portuguese food, lots of seafood, and an unbeatable location. Perfect if you want something more informal but still very “Arrábida vibes.”

O Galeão (very close by)

Not exactly on the tiny Portinho beach, but just a short drive away and well worth it. Excellent traditional Portuguese cuisine, great fish and seafood, and a more spacious, comfortable setting. A favorite among locals.
